Fainting is caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain. Everyone with POTS is different and only about 30% of patients actually pass out. When I faint I usually lose my vision and fall, but am still conscious. As soon as I lie down I immediately feel better as oxygen returns to my brain.
The first time I fainted after getting POTS was at a duty free store while we were buying liquor. It was a really long line up (about 10 mins) and we were next in line when I suddenly felt really sick and everything started going black. My husband grabbed me under the arms to keep me up and apparently I stumbled around mumbling and looking completely wasted (I was very much sober). I remember hearing a cashier tell my husband, "you should probably take her back to your car."
