I realized I was tired of talking about my problems all of the time. It got depressing to keep thinking about all the things in my life that weren't going the way I wanted them to go. I realized that when I talked about my blessings, not only did I feel better, but the person I was talking to also seemed to feel happy. I like being happy and I like being around happy people. It wasn't too hard then for me to start thinking and talking about my blessings more, while reserving an appropriate amount of time to talk about my problems.
Something incredibly helpful I've learned is to give myself the time to vent, grieve, have a pity party, etc. and then move on. Get it over with because it's healthy to express these feelings, but then don't dwell on them. Having a positive attitude does not mean repressing your feelings, because that's fake and will eventually lead to a break down.
