So why doesn't anyone know about POTS?
POTS was only discovered in 1993 and was not taught in med school until recently. Recent med school graduates often know about POTS but slightly older doctors do not.
The Mayo Clinic Estimates that 1 in 100 teenagers develop POTS before adulthood. It is estimated that 500,000 to 1 million Americans are living with POTS. Yet so many of these people are undiagnosed and aren't being treated. Instead they're likely put on anti-depressants from Depression or misdiagnosed with other similar conditions. For over 3 years I fell into this category. The day I got diagnosed I cried in relief because we finally knew what was wrong with me, after years of trying to convince doctors that I was really sick. Do you know how awful it is to be in the ER, feeling absolutely horrible, but have the doctors focus on your stress level or whether or not you have an eating disorder? I understand why my doctors did that, but it was really discouraging and frustrating.
